May to September is the dry season, with the clearest skies. From November to March it rains frequently. Entry is by timed circuits, and tickets sell out well in advance in high season.
From Cusco or Ollantaytambo, train to Aguas Calientes and then a bus of about 30 minutes to the entrance. There is no road directly to the site.
Most itineraries for Machu Picchu call for 2 to 3 days. Less than that still covers the highlights, but leaves little room for weather or tides to interfere.
